“Escudriñad las Escrituras; porque a vosotros os parece que en ellas tenéis la vida eterna; y ellas son las que dan testimonio de mí” (Juan 5:3939Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. (John 5:39)).
Las Sagradas Escrituras humanamente se las puede apreciar con diferente enfoque. Podemos leer y estudiarlas con un mero interés histórico, científico, literario, filosófico, jurídico, arqueológico, dogmático, etc.; o aún, con un simple interés teológico. Todo lo cual no tiene ningún provecho espiritual.
Durante el ministerio terrenal del Señor Jesucristo, los fariseos leían las Sagradas Escrituras de esa manera, por lo cual Él les dijo: “Nunca habéis oído su voz, ni habéis visto su aspecto, ni tenéis su palabra morando en vosotros; porque a quien él envió, vosotros no lo creéis. Escudriñad las Escrituras: porque os parece que en ellas tenéis la vida eterna; y ellas mismas son las que dan testimonio de mí; pero no queréis venir a mí para que tengáis vida eterna” (Juan 5:37-4037And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. 38And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. 39Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. 40And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. (John 5:37‑40)).
Al leer las Sagradas Escrituras, los fariseos, no aceptaban al Señor Jesucristo como el Mesías prometido, ni creían en él, y por ello es que el escritor de la epístola a los hebreos dice: “A ellos no les aprovechó, el oír la palabra, por no ir acompañada de fe” (Hebreos 4:22For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. (Hebrews 4:2)). Y Pablo en 2 Corintios 3:14-1714But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ. 15But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart. 16Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away. 17Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. (2 Corinthians 3:14‑17) aclaró más la situación de ellos, así: “Pero el entendimiento de ellos se embotó; porque hasta el día de hoy, cuando leen el antiguo pacto, les queda el mismo velo no descubierto, el cual por Cristo es quitado. Y aun hasta el día de hoy, cuando leen a Moisés, el velo está puesto sobre el corazón de ellos. Pero cuando se conviertan al Señor, el velo se quitará. Porque el Señor es el Espíritu; y donde está el Espíritu del Señor, allí hay libertad”. Ellos no ponían atención, ni daban importancia a lo que dicen las Sagradas Escrituras; por aquello Jesús les dijo: “Erráis, ignorando las Escrituras y el poder de Dios” (Mateo 22:2929Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. (Matthew 22:29)).
En el libro de Proverbios, tenemos una recomendación maravillosa, la misma que también estuvo dedicada a los fariseos: “Hijo mío, está atento a mis palabras; inclina tu oído a mis razones. No se aparten de tus ojos; guárdalas en medio de tu corazón; porque son vida a los que las hallan, y medicina a todo tu cuerpo” (Proverbios 4:20-2220My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. 21Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. 22For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. (Proverbs 4:20‑22)).
Hoy en día, muchos cristianos que leen la Palabra de Dios con incredulidad e incertidumbre de corazón, incurren en el mismo error que los fariseos. La naturaleza del hombre carnal es igual que en aquel tiempo.
El gran apóstol Pablo nos exhorta: “No os conforméis a este siglo, sino transformaos por medio de la renovación de vuestro entendimiento, para que comprobéis cuál sea la buena voluntad de Dios agradable y perfecta” (Romanos 12:22And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:2)). Juan el apóstol amado manifiesta: “Bienaventurado el que lee, y los que oyen las palabras de esta profecía, y guardan las cosas en ella escritas; porque el tiempo está cerca” (Apocalipsis 1:33Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand. (Revelation 1:3)).
Los pasajes bíblicos antes transcritos, enfatizan la gran importancia de leer la Palabra de Dios. Se nos dice que no solamente leamos y escuchemos la Palabra, sino que, además se nos enseña a guardarla en nuestro corazón, para lo cual es menester leerla y meditarla con devoción, con fe, con temor y reverencia a Dios, escudriñando diligentemente Su Palabra, para saber cuál es la buena voluntad de Dios.
La palabra ESCUDRIÑAR significa “examinar, buscar, inquirir o averiguar cuidadosamente una cosa y sus circunstancias”. Por lo tanto, deducimos que los Bereanos realizaron una investigación minuciosa y cuidadosa de las Sagradas Escrituras, para así enterarse de su mensaje y comprender sus enseñanzas. El sabio Salomón en el capítulo segundo del libro de los Proverbios nos insiste a que escudriñemos la sabiduría de Dios como a tesoros, para que entendamos el temor a Dios, lo cual es el principio de la sabiduría.
El secreto de “conocer” y comprender la Palabra de Dios es escudriñarlo con el deseo de “hacer la voluntad de Dios” (Juan 7:1717If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. (John 7:17)). El anhelo de conocer las Escrituras con el simple deseo de “saber” no es suficiente; debemos estudiar la biblia con humildad, sinceridad y con una actitud receptiva para guardarla en nuestro corazón y ponerlo por obra en nuestras vidas. La bienaventuranza que recibiremos será mucho mayor al esfuerzo que empleamos (Juan 13:1717If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. (John 13:17)).
La lectura superficial no es suficiente; leer la Biblia con indiferencia no tiene provecho alguno; incluso, ni aun leerla y releerla es suficiente. Debemos digerir lo que leemos, y para lograrlo, debemos primeramente masticarlo. Tenemos que reconocer nuestras limitaciones, inclinar nuestro rostro y pedir a Dios, quien inspiró la Palabra, en primer lugar, que nos unja con su Santo Espíritu, que nos inspire a medida que avanzamos en la lectura y meditación de ella. Leerla y releerla, meditar en ella, y volver a meditar en ella con fe es el procedimiento de renovar nuestro entendimiento; se consigue que la Palabra llegue a nuestra mente, quede en nuestro corazón, y se cumpla en nuestra vida.
Una verdadera fe viva es posible sólo cuando obedecemos la Palabra de Dios y nuestros pensamientos son positivos y correctos. “Por lo demás, hermanos, todo lo que es verdadero, todo lo honesto, todo lo justo, todo lo puro, todo lo amable, todo lo que es de buen nombre; si hay virtud alguna, si algo digno de alabanza, en esto pensad” (Filipenses 4:88Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. (Philippians 4:8)). “Llevando cautivo todo pensamiento a la obediencia a Cristo” (2 Corintios 10:55Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; (2 Corinthians 10:5)).
Nuestros pensamientos deben estar bajo control. Se nos exhorta a pensar no solamente en lo que nosotros creemos que es correcto, sino, en lo que Cristo piensa que es correcto. Debemos ser obedientes no sólo en el hacer, sino inclusive en el pensar.
Es por esto que sabiamente alguien ha recomendado que “para leer la Palabra de Dios no debemos ponernos los anteojos de la teología alienante que nos ha legado la iglesia profesante”.
La Palabra de Dios habla de alguien que:
Por tanto, si somos verdaderos cristianos, “Como dice el Espíritu Santo: Si oyeres hoy su voz no endurezcáis vuestros corazones” (Hebreos 3:7-87Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, 8Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: (Hebrews 3:7‑8)). Si escudriñamos la Palabra de Dios con sinceridad en él, esperamos que se cumpla en nosotros la declaración escritural: “Cerca de ti está la Palabra, en tu boca y en tu corazón” (Romanos 10:88But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; (Romans 10:8)).
Para que el cristiano fiel y verdadero crezca en su vida espiritual, no hay nada que pueda sustituir a una constante lectura de la Palabra de Dios. El interés, el gozo, y la satisfacción que nos inspira el escudriñar las Sagradas Escrituras es conocer cada día mejor a nuestro adorado y único Salvador, para “Crecer en la gracia y el conocimiento de nuestro Señor Jesucristo” (2 Pedro 3:1818But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. (2 Peter 3:18)); y este conocimiento aplicarlo a nuestras vidas, “Hasta que todos lleguemos a la unidad de la fe y del conocimiento del Hijo de Dios, a un varón perfecto, a la medida de la estatura de la plenitud de Cristo” (Efesios 4:1313Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: (Ephesians 4:13)).
Jesús reprendió a los escribas y fariseos diciendo: “Hipócritas, bien profetizó de vosotros Isaías, cuando dijo: Este pueblo de labio me honra; más su corazón está lejos de mí” (Mateo 15:7-87Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, 8This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoreth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. (Matthew 15:7‑8)). Quiera Dios que nosotros podamos decir juntamente con el salmista: “Con todo mi corazón te he buscado; no me dejes desviarme de tus mandamientos. En mi corazón he guardado tus dichos para no pecar contra ti” (Salmo 119:10-1110With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. 11Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. (Psalm 119:10‑11)). “El impío, si se apartare de todos sus pecados que hizo, y guardare todos mis estatutos e hiciera según el derecho y la justicia, de cierto vivirá; no morirá” (Ezequiel 18:2121But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. (Ezekiel 18:21)). “El espíritu es el que da vida; la carne para nada aprovecha; las palabras que yo os he hablado son espíritu y son vida” (Juan 6:6363It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. (John 6:63)).
Debemos seguir el buen ejemplo de los cristianos de Berea, quienes recibieron la Palabra con toda solicitud, escudriñando cada día las Escrituras para ver si estas cosas eran así” (Hechos 17:1111These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. (Acts 17:11)). “Examinadlo todo; retened lo bueno” (1 Tesalonicenses 5:2121Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. (1 Thessalonians 5:21)). “Procura con diligencia presentarte a Dios aprobado, como obrero que no tiene de que avergonzarse, que usa bien la Palabra de verdad” (2 Timoteo 2:1515Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15)). No olvidemos que “La letra mata, mas el Espíritu vivifica” (2 Corintios 2:1414Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savor of his knowledge by us in every place. (2 Corinthians 2:14)). 17So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17)).
