Ethiopia

This is the Greek and Roman name for Cush, a kingdom in Africa to the south of Egypt. The boundary between the two kingdoms is not well defined, indeed, it may have varied at different times. The first cataract, 24° N, is generally taken as its northern boundary: its extent southward is altogether unknown (Gen. 2:1313And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia. (Genesis 2:13); Esther 1:11Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus, (this is Ahasuerus which reigned, from India even unto Ethiopia, over an hundred and seven and twenty provinces:) (Esther 1:1); Ezek. 29:1010Behold, therefore I am against thee, and against thy rivers, and I will make the land of Egypt utterly waste and desolate, from the tower of Syene even unto the border of Ethiopia. At times Ethiopia conquered Egypt: two of the kings mentioned in scripture were Ethiopians (2 Chron. 14:99And there came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an host of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots; and came unto Mareshah. (2 Chronicles 14:9); Isa. 37:99And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He is come forth to make war with thee. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, (Isaiah 37:9)).
