• {v.21-22} As there has been some controversy upon the statement, here and in Ex. 11:2, that the Israelites were commanded to borrow the valuables of the Egyptians on the eve of their exodus, it may be well to point out that the word has been wrongly translated. There is no idea of “borrowing” in it. It means simply “to ask.” The context shows that owing to God's manifest interposition the children of Israel would be in “favor in the sight of the Egyptians;” and being made to feel that they had suffered wrong at their hands, they gladly gave them whatever they desired—it may be as a kind of propitiation—with the full knowledge that they would see the Israelites no more.
