A term constantly applied both in the O. T. and in the N. T. to the patriarchs and chief men of Israel (2 Kings 15:9⁹And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, as his fathers had done: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. (2 Kings 15:9); Dan. 11:37³⁷Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all. (Daniel 11:37); Rom. 9:5⁵Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.
