Shackles – (from sometime before 1860)

Shackles for the feet. It is said of Joseph that his feet were hurt with fetters (Psa. 105:18¹⁸Whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron: (Psalm 105:18)). They are spoken of as being made of brass and of iron (Judg. 16:21²¹But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house. (Judges 16:21); 2 Sam. 3:34³⁴Thy hands were not bound, nor thy feet put into fetters: as a man falleth before wicked men, so fellest thou. And all the people wept again over him. (2 Samuel 3:34); 2 Kings 25:7⁷And they slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and put out the eyes of Zedekiah, and bound him with fetters of brass, and carried him to Babylon. (2 Kings 25:7); Job 36:8⁸And if they be bound in fetters, and be holden in cords of affliction; (Job 36:8); Psalm 149:8⁸To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron; (Psalm 149:8); Mark 5:4⁴Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. (Mark 5:4); Luke 8:29²⁹(For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.) (Luke 8:29)).
