165. Head of the Church Triumphant
7,7,8,7.
by C. Wesley
Head of the church triumphant!
Till Thou appear, Thy members here
Would sing like those in glory!
We lift our hearts and voices,
And cry aloud, and give to God
The praise of our salvation.
While in affliction’s furnace,
And passing through the fire,
The love we praise which tries our ways,
And ever brings us nigher.
We lift our hearts, exulting
The love divine which made us Thine
Shall keep us Thine forever.
Thou dost conduct Thy people
Safely through all temptation;
Nor will we fear, since Thou art near,
The world with sin and Satan,
Display their strength before us;
By Thee we shall break through them all,
And join the heavenly chorus.
“Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.” (Romans 8:37)
By faith we see the glory
Of which Thou dost assure us;
The world despise, for that high prize
Which Thou hast set before us.
And may we, counted worthy
To meet the Son from heaven,
There see our Lord, by all adored,
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1)
“I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14)
“But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage.” (Luke 20:35)
“Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer.” (2 Thessalonians 1:5)
