Herd
In the Old Testament the term “herd” is applied to the cattle, the word “flocks” embracing the sheep and goats. As these, with camels, constituted the principal property of the patriarchs, the herdmen held an important office. All the sons of Jacob were introduced to Pharaoh as shepherds, and men whose trade had been to feed cattle (Gen. 46:3232And the men are shepherds, for their trade hath been to feed cattle; and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have. (Genesis 46:32); Ex. 10:99And Moses said, We will go with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds will we go; for we must hold a feast unto the Lord. (Exodus 10:9); 1 Sam. 21:77Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the Lord; and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that belonged to Saul. (1 Samuel 21:7)). In the New Testament the term “herd” is only applied to the swine that, possessed by the demons, perished in the sea (Matt. 8:30, 3230And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding. 32And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters. (Matthew 8:32)).
