The word ayyalah is supposed to allude to any kind of deer found in Palestine: no particular species can be identified. It is used as a symbol of activity (Gen. 49:21²¹Naphtali is a hind let loose: he giveth goodly words. (Genesis 49:21); 2 Sam. 22:34³⁴He maketh my feet like hinds' feet: and setteth me upon my high places. (2 Samuel 22:34); Psa. 18:33³³He maketh my feet like hinds' feet, and setteth me upon my high places.
