Land of Gennesaret

This is a plain bordering the lake of the same name on the N.W. It is about a mile and a quarter wide and three miles long, reaching nearly to Tell Hum. It has some springs, besides three streams that cross it, and being thus well watered, is a place of great fertility. Josephus gives a glowing description of it (Wars 3. 10, 8). Being close to Capernaum it was doubtless often traversed by the Lord, and was where many of His miracles were wrought (Matt. 14:34³⁴And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret. (Matthew 14:34); Mark 6:53⁵³And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore. (Mark 6:53)). The district is now called el Ghuweir.
