11He that toucheth a dead person, any dead body of a man, shall be unclean seven days.
12He shall purify himself with it on the third day, and on the seventh day he shall be clean; but if he purify not himself the third day, then the seventh day he shall not be clean.
13Whoever toucheth a dead person, the dead body of a man that is dead, and purifieth not himself, defileth the tabernacle of Jehovah; and that soul shall be cut off from Israel; for the water of separation was not sprinkled upon him: he shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet upon him.
14This is the law, when a man dieth in a tent: every one that cometh into the tent, and all that is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days.
15And every open vessel, which hath no covering bound upon it, shall be unclean.

17And they shall take for the unclean of the ashes of the purification-offering that hath been burned, and shall put running water thereon in a vessel;

 The order of purification is instructive — the priests and Levites first purified themselves, then the people, and then the wall (Neh. 12:30). Purifying of things will not make us pure (Mark 7:1-23). Furthermore, purification should be distinguished from the adherence to a ritual or dogma. That we should walk in the truth goes without saying (2 John 4), however, the heart and conscience must also be engaged — else there will not be purity. (1 Tim. 1:5).  Here again is the order (and it is most instructive) to which reference has been made {They worked from within to without; thus, beginning from themselves, they worked outward to the circumference of their responsibility.}; and we may also learn that unless we have "purified" ourselves, it is vain for us to attempt to "purify" others. This truth is everywhere affirmed in Scripture. For example, it would be impossible for any whose own feet were not washed (John 13) to wash the feet of their fellow believers; and the Lord Himself taught, that before we can take the mote out of our brother's eye, the beam must be taken out of our own eye.
