10I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, might exact of them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this usury.
11Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.
12Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.
13Also I shook my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labor, that performeth not this promise, even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the Lord. And the people did according to this promise.

 It is interesting to note that the expression house of God is especially characteristic of this post-captivity period. It is used frequently in the Books of the Chronicles, but not once in Kings. This would seem contrary to circumstances. In the Book of Kings the glory of the Lord filled the temple, but by the time of the captivity that glory had departed. There seems, however, to have been a special sensitivity among the faithful who had returned from the captivity; they recognized that the temple was owned by God as His house, despite the absence of the Shekinah glory, and that there was a conduct suited to it (John 2:16).  He thus went down to the root of the evil—forsaking the house of God (compare Heb. 10:25)—and at the same time dealt with those (the rulers) who were responsible for the neglect; for, if they were careless, the people would soon imitate their example.
