Besides the word
πρόσφατος
, for the newly-made and living way in
Hebrews 10:20
20
By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; (Hebrews 10:20)
; and the word
ἄγναφος
for the new (unfulled, unfinished) cloth in
Matthew 9:16
16
No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. (Matthew 9:16)
and
Mark 2:21
21
No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse. (Mark 2:21)
; there are two words translated “new,” the difference between which is important. One is
καινός
, “new” in the sense of never having existed or been used before, that is, new in the sense of “different”; and
νέος
“new” in the sense of “fresh, youthful.” The new (
νέοσ
) wine must be put into new (
καινός
) bottles (
Matt. 9:17
17
Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved. (Matthew 9:17)
). Except in the Gospels, in reference to the wine as above, the word
νέος
is used only in “a new lump” (
1 Cor. 5:7
7
Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: (1 Corinthians 5:7)
), “the new [man]” (
Col. 3:10
10
And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: (Colossians 3:10)
), “the new covenant” (
Heb. 12:24
24
And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. (Hebrews 12:24)
), and “young woman” (
Titus 2:4
4
That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, (Titus 2:4)
). In all other places the word employed is
καινός
, and this is important, as indicating the entirely different character of the new covenant, the new creation, the new man, the new heavens and the new earth, from all that had been. “He that sat upon the throne said, Behold I make all things new” (
Rev. 21:5
5
And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. (Revelation 21:5)
).
