(hill). A fortified hill in Jerusalem (2 Chron. 27:3³He built the high gate of the house of the Lord, and on the wall of Ophel he built much. (2 Chronicles 27:3); Neh. 3:26; 11:21²⁶Moreover the Nethinims dwelt in Ophel, unto the place over against the water gate toward the east, and the tower that lieth out. (Nehemiah 3:26)
²¹But the Nethinims dwelt in Ophel: and Ziha and Gispa were over the Nethinims. (Nehemiah 11:21)).

A part of Jerusalem, first mentioned in 2 Chronicles 27:3³He built the high gate of the house of the Lord, and on the wall of Ophel he built much. (2 Chronicles 27:3), where it is said that Jotham built much “on the wall of Ophel.” Manasseh in his building, “compassed about Ophel and raised it up a very great height” (2 Chron. 33:14¹⁴Now after this he built a wall without the city of David, on the west side of Gihon, in the valley, even to the entering in at the fish gate, and compassed about Ophel, and raised it up a very great height, and put captains of war in all the fenced cities of Judah. (2 Chronicles 33:14)). On the return from exile the Nethinim dwelt there (Neh. 3:26-27²⁶Moreover the Nethinims dwelt in Ophel, unto the place over against the water gate toward the east, and the tower that lieth out. ²⁷After them the Tekoites repaired another piece, over against the great tower that lieth out, even unto the wall of Ophel. (Nehemiah 3:26‑27); Neh. 11:21²¹But the Nethinims dwelt in Ophel: and Ziha and Gispa were over the Nethinims. (Nehemiah 11:21)). It is supposed to have been at the S.E. corner of Jerusalem, outside the present walls, near the Virgin’s fountain. The same word is translated “tower” in 2 Kings 5:24²⁴And when he came to the tower, he took them from their hand, and bestowed them in the house: and he let the men go, and they departed. (2 Kings 5:24), as in the margin of some of the above passages.
