The poison of serpents and of asps is used in scripture symbolically for the judgment of God and for the malignity inherent in the wicked (Deut. 32:24,33²⁴They shall be burnt with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust. (Deuteronomy 32:24)
³³Their wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps. (Deuteronomy 32:33); Job 6:4⁴For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me. (Job 6:4); Job 20:16¹⁶He shall suck the poison of asps: the viper's tongue shall slay him. (Job 20:16); Psa. 58:4⁴Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: they are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear; (Psalm 58:4); Psa. 140:3³They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders' poison is under their lips. Selah. (Psalm 140:3); Rom. 3:13¹³Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: (Romans 3:13)). The tongue is “an unruly evil, full of deadly poison” (James 3:8⁸But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. (James 3:8)). Job 6:4⁴For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me. (Job 6:4) apparently alludes to arrows being poisoned.
