Gatherer of public revenue; tax-collector, abhorred by Jews (Matt. 18:17¹⁷And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican. (Matthew 18:17); Luke 3:12-13; 19:2¹²Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? ¹³And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.
