Future rewards for the Christian are spoken of frequently in the New Testament. They are open to all. A cup of cold water given to a disciple because he belongs to Christ, shall not lose its reward (
Mark 9:41
41
For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward. (Mark 9:41)
); and the Lord Jesus said, “Behold, I come quickly; and My reward is with Me, to give every man according as his work shall be” (
Rev. 22:12
12
And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. (Revelation 22:12)
). He who labors in the Lord’s service, if his work abides, will receive his reward (
1 Cor. 3:8,14
8
Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labor. (1 Corinthians 3:8)
14
If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. (1 Corinthians 3:14)
; compare
2 John 1:8
8
Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. (2 John 8)
). At the same time the Lord will reward the doer of evil with its fitting recompense (
2 Sam. 3:39
39
And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah be too hard for me: the Lord shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness. (2 Samuel 3:39)
).
Rewards are not held out as a motive before the soul: each should be able to say, The love of Christ constraineth me (
2 Cor. 5:14
14
For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: (2 Corinthians 5:14)
). But they are added, in the aboundings of love and grace, as an encouragement amid the dangers and difficulties of the way. Believers are warned that they be not beguiled of their reward (
Col. 2:18
18
Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, (Colossians 2:18)
; compare
Rev. 3:11
11
Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. (Revelation 3:11)
).
