191. Still in a Land of Drought and Dearth

C.M.
by M. Bowley
1
Still in a land of drought and dearth,

Our longing spirits cry

To Thee, the Lord of heaven and earth,

Our thirst to satisfy.
2
O Thou with love more strong than death,

Unquenched by deepest waves;

We need throughout the walk of faith

The same free grace that saves.
“Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.” (Song of Solomon 8:6-7)
“(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)” (2 Corinthians 5:7)
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.” (Ephesians 2:8)
3
We would not take from falsehood’s fire,

Though glittering be the spark;

Thou only art our heart’s desire,

Art light where all is dark.
“And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.” (John 18:18)
“Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.” (Psalm 73:25)
“This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5)
4
Dark unbelief alone can shroud

A Sun that sets no more;

And when Thy grace removes the cloud,

We see Thee as before.
“Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.” (Hebrews 3:12)
“And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.” (Revelation 22:5)
5
We soon shall join the white-robed throng,

We soon shall walk by sight;

Till then by faith we raise the song,

By faith in Thee delight.
“Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.” (Revelation 3:4)
“Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.” (1 John 3:2)
“Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory.” (1 Peter 1:8)
