The subject worked out for this month is- Christ our Example.
We are sure from the numerous letters we have received, that the search has much refreshed the hearts of those engaged in it, and we earnestly trust that the result now printed as a whole, may be used for blessing to all who read it, stirring up many in real desire to be more like The One who has left us so perfect an example, to the end that we might walk in His footsteps.
We may add that the subject being Christ Himself as our example, we have not included in the references passages which record only His precepts.
With a view to making the subject of real practical value we have added an exhortation from one of the Epistles, to most of the divisions.
Choosing God's Time for everything.- " And he straightly charged them to tell no man that thing." Luke 9:2121And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing; (Luke 9:21). "My time is not yet come, but your time is alway ready." John 7:66Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready. (John 7:6).
The Service of God, the food of the soul.- " My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his word." John 4:3434Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. (John 4:34).
20: 3, 21, &c.
Obedience to God taking the precedence of natural ties.-"Follow me." Matt. 8:2222But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead. (Matthew 8:22). "Jesus said unto her (his mother), Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come." John 2:33And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. (John 2:3).
Joy when others are used in God's service.-"Notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretense, or in truth, Christ is preached, and -I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice." Phil. 1:1818What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice. (Philippians 1:18). "Forbid him not for he that is not against us is on our part." Mark 9:3939But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me. (Mark 9:39).
Care that nothing shall be wasted.- "Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost." John 6:1212When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. (John 6:12).
The Truth of God the rule of doctrine.-" As many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them." Gal. 6:1616And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. (Galatians 6:16). " My doctrine is not Mine, but His that sent Me." John 7:1616Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. (John 7:16).
