55. Through Waves, Through Clouds and Storms

S.M.
by P. Gerhardt, tr. by J. Wesley
1
Through waves, through clouds and storms,

God gently clears the way;

We wait His time; so shall the night

Soon end in blissful day.
“The Lord is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the Lord hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.” (Nahum 1:3)
“The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.” (Romans 13:12)
2
He everywhere hath sway,

And all things serve His might;

His every act pure blessing is,

His path unsullied light.
“But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!” (Matthew 8:27)
“In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will.” (Ephesians 1:11)
“And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.” (Isaiah 42:16)

When He makes bare His arm,

Who shall His work withstand?

When He His people’s cause defends,

Who then shall stay His hand?
“The Lord hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.” (Isaiah 52:10)
“Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honor, and another unto dishonor?” (Romans 9:20-21)

We leave it to Himself

To choose and to command,

With wonder filled, we soon shall see

How wise, how strong His hand!
“What man is he that feareth the Lord? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.” (Psalm 25:12)
“Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.” (John 15:14)
“O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!” (Romans 11:33)
“Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is thy hand, and high is thy right hand.” (Psalm 89:13)
5
We comprehend Him not,

Yet earth and heaven tell

God sits as sovereign on the throne

And ruleth all things well.
“God thundereth marvellously with his voice; great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend.” (Job 37:5)
“The Lord hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.” (Psalm 103:19)
“And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.” (Mark 7:37)
