Trance

Narrator: Chris Genthree
The word is ἔκστασις, “ecstasy,” in which, as it were, the mind is carried beyond the body. It is translated “astonishment” in Mark 5:4242And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment. (Mark 5:42); and “amazement” in Acts 3:1010And they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him. (Acts 3:10). It is rendered “trance” when Peter had the vision of the sheet let down from heaven; and when Paul in the temple saw the Lord and heard Him speak to him (Acts 10:1010And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance, (Acts 10:10); Acts 11:55I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me: (Acts 11:5); Acts 22:1717And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance; (Acts 22:17)). The same word is used in the LXX for the deep sleep of Adam and of Abram (Gen. 2:2121And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; (Genesis 2:21); Gen. 15:1212And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him. (Genesis 15:12)).
