Honor

“Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee” (Exodus 20:12).

Of the so-called ten commandments, this is the first that is directed to our human relationships, and it also carries the promise of long life over into the Christian era. “Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth” (Ephesians 6:2-30). So important is this principle that we have it repeated eight times in Scripture. As well as the above two references, it is in Deuteronomy 5:16, Matthew 15:4, Matthew 19:19, Mark 7:10, Mark 10:19, Luke 18:20

When we are young and at home, we are to respect and obey our parents who have given us life. As the years pass, and we get older and on our own, the need to obey changes. However, honor and respect should always be given. God places such a premium on this attitude that He attaches a special promise to all who will fulfil it. Think of some way today that you can express love and respect to your parents.
