Worldly “Know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God” (James 4:4). Over two hundred years ago, John Newton, author of the well-known hymn, Amazing Grace, wrote the following, based on the above verse: “Worldly men will be true to their principles, and if we, (as Christians), were as true to ours, the visits between the two parties would be short and seldom. A Christian in the world is like a man transacting his affairs in the rain. He will not suddenly leave his client because it rains; but the moment the business is done, he is off: as it is said (of those in the early days of Christianity): “And being let go, they went to their own company” (Acts 4:23).” It has been well said, “we are in the world, but not of the world.”The Lord Himself, said, when praying for His disciples: “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world” (John 17:16).
