Yearly Remembrance

“But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year” (Hebrews 10:3).

The sacrifices of the Old Testament and all the ritual and ceremony that accompanied the Law of Moses, could never put away sin. “And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins” (Hebrews 10:11).

Even when everything was done exactly to God’s specifications, the instructions were very clear: “And this shall be an everlasting statute unto you, to make an atonement for the children of Israel for all their sins once a year” (Leviticus 16:34).

How different it is with the supreme and incomparable sacrifice of Christ! “But this man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God” (Hebrews 10:12). As a result God can affirm: “And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more” (Hebrews 10:17). What peace, confidence, and joy, this gives us in the presence of our God and Saviour today. “Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving” (Psalm 95:2).
