The Name of Jesus
“And she shall bring forth a son,
and thou shalt call his name JESUS:
for He shall save His people
from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).
What a wonderful birth announcement this was to Joseph (the earthly father of the Lord Jesus), and to the whole world. For 2000 years, the religious exercises of the Passover had rolled by. Rivers of blood had flowed from Israel’s altars, as countless sacrifices had been slain and offered day after day and year after year.
Now with Israel far away from their God and the sacrifices polluted and neglected, and the nation enslaved by a Gentile empire (the Romans), the glorious news is declared concerning the birth of a child who would, “save His people from their sins.”
What Israel could never achieve, what all the sacrifices could not accomplish, Jesus would carry out to perfection “by the sacrifice of Himself” (Hebrews 9:26).
What a Saviour we have! What blessings and future have been secured for us, and all because of that mighty work of the cross! What a name … the name of JESUS!
