“If Day”

The 19th of February, 1942, was an unusual and interesting day for Canada. It was “If Day.” On that day there was a simulated, fake, Nazi German invasion and occupation of the Canadian city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and surrounding areas during the Second World War. It was organized by the Greater Winnipeg Victory Loan organization, and was the largest military exercise in Winnipeg to that point. It included a staged firefight between Canadian troops and volunteers dressed as German soldiers, and was intended to show what it would be like “if” Canada fell under Nazi forces, so that Canadians would support the war effort more fully.

In real life, it is not a question of “if” trials and difficulties come, but “when.” These trials and difficulties come because we live in a world where Satan is the god and prince and where sin is prevalent on every hand. However, we are told, “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience” (James 1:2-3). If we learn from the things that happen to us and it draws us closer to our Captain, the Lord Jesus, then there will be true power and blessing in our lives.
