The Poor Wise Man

“This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me: There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it: Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man. Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.” (Ecclesiastes 9:13-16).

The poor, wise man is the Lord Jesus. “Though He was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor” (2 Corinthians 8:9). The city is a picture of this world, and the enemy is Satan. The Lord by the work of Calvary has delivered us from our sins and from the judgment that is coming on this world. Will you remember Him today, or will you be like those in the story who forgot their deliverer?

The Lord Jesus has asked us, “This do in remembrance of Me” (1 Corinthians 11:24). He has even told us how to remember Him. “For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till He come” (1 Corinthians 11:26). Will you remember Him today?
