Culturally Acceptable

“Making the Word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye” (Mark 7:13).

This statement, made by the Lord while here on earth, was a rebuke to the Pharisees for replacing the Word of God with what they felt comfortable with or what they felt was culturally acceptable for their time.

Two thousand years later, we can be guilty of the same sin by insisting that a certain passage of Scripture simply reflects the culture of the time in which it was written. It is a simple, subtle trick usually designed so that we will not have to be obedient to some exhortation or statement of the Bible we don’t like. The result is that we end up replacing the revealed will of God with our culture, that with which we feel comfortable. But remember,

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).

All Scripture is from God and all Scripture is to be obeyed!
