Silence

“A time to keep silence” (Ecclesiastes 3:7).

In keeping with yesterday’s meditation, I often wonder, Whatever happened to silence? Thought? Remembrance? Meditatation? Study? These can be troublesome and wearying exercises for some. So, with clicks of the button, on goes the music and up goes the volume.

On the other hand, time in the presence of the Lord, listening to His voice and quietly considering what He says, is invaluable. It calms our minds and hearts; it gives peace and joy; it strengthens our faith, and it gives us to know His mind and will for us. In the silence of His company, He can speak in ways that are not otherwise possible. Like the prophet Elijah, we will hear Him in

“a still small voice” (1 Kings 19:12).

Schedule some time each day away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and the noisy routine of necessary activities. Be like the writer of Psalm 85, who said,

I will hear what God the Lord will speak: for He will speak peace unto His people” (verse 8).
