Ashamed “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth” (Romans 1:16). Paul wrote these words to the Christians at Rome, probably to encourage them to take a stand. Rome was the capital of the known world at that time. It was a dark, heathen metropolis full of violence, corruption, and the worst of sins and loose living. In short, it was a pagan Gentile city! The Apostle had been given a commission from the Lord to preach to the Gentiles: “He is a chosen vessel unto Me, to bear my name before the Gentiles” (Acts 9:15). So he was very interested in going to Rome and preaching the good news. Each of us has a commission as well. “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season” (2 Timothy 4:2). Ask the Lord to help you to not be ashamed, but take a stand for Him. Be like those in the early church who prayed, “Grant unto Thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak Thy word” (Act 4:29). The Lord will certainly help you not to be ashamed.
