“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!” (Luke 13:34).
The Lord Jesus had to pronounce judgment on the nation of Israel, for they rejected Him as the Son of God. When they rejected Him, there was no other way for them to be saved. However, the love of the Lord Jesus went out to them just the same, and He mourned over them.
When a mother hen has her small chicks around her, they run to her as soon as any danger approaches. Then she spreads her wings over them to protect them. The Lord Jesus wanted to do the same thing for the Jews. He loved them, and had come to save them. If they had been willing to come to Him, He would have saved them, and protected them from coming judgment. But even when they refused to come, His love still went out to them, and He felt their rejection very keenly.
Even though many in this world reject Him today, yet His love goes out to the whole world, and He is longing for more to come and be saved. He died on the cross so that all who come to Him can be saved.
