“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: who, when He had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that He had, and bought it” (Matthew 13:45-46).

In our verse today, the Lord Jesus is compared to a merchant man, who is looking for good pearls. Evidently the merchant man was in the habit of finding good pearls, but then He comes upon a pearl so costly that in order to have it, He must sell all that He has. But He is glad to do so, and willingly sells everything in order to have that one pearl.

This is what the Lord Jesus has done for us—His church. He loved us so much, and wanted to have us so badly, that He was willing to give up everything for us. Not only did the Lord Jesus give up His heavenly glory to come down to this world as a man, but He went to Calvary’s cross, to suffer and die, so that He could have us as His pearl.

The price He paid for us was unable to be known; it was a price that only God could estimate. Yet the Lord Jesus gladly paid it, so that you and I could be with Him for all eternity.
