“My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?…My God, I cry by day, and Thou answereth not; and by night, and there is no rest for Me: and Thou art holy, Thou that dwellest amid the praises of Israel” (Psalm 22:1-3 JND).
You are all familiar with the gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, where the life of the Lord Jesus on earth, His rejection, and His crucifixion, are all recorded for us. In these books of the Bible we get the actual record of our Lord’s life, but in the Psalms we get more of His feelings and emotions during it all.
By inspiration, David was able to voice many of the feelings of our Lord Jesus while He was on earth, and in Psalm 22, we get His feelings on the cross during His sufferings at the hands of God. These were the sufferings for sin, when He bore all the judgment of a holy God.
The exact words of the Lord Jesus at the end of these sufferings are given to us here—“My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?” God could not answer Him, for as we read in verse three, “But Thou art holy, O Thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.” During those hours of darkness, the Lord Jesus was made sin for us, and at that time God in His holiness could not look upon sin, or answer Him.
The Lord Jesus felt it very much that He was forsaken of God, and cried out at the end of His sufferings. How we should thank Him for all He suffered for us!
