A tribe descended from Ham, and described as one of “the families of the Canaanites,” or descendants of Canaan (Gen. 10:1818And the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite: and afterward were the families of the Canaanites spread abroad. (Genesis 10:18); 1 Chron. 1:1616And the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite. (1 Chronicles 1:16)). The Jerusalem Targum and the Arabic Version place them at Emesa, the modern Hums, 34° 44' N, 36° 42' E.
