The first book of Kings (1 Kings 22:43) seems to say the opposite: "Only, the high places were not removed: the people offered and burned incense still on the high places." This passage, which seems to be contradictory, appears to be confirmed even in our book which says: "Only the high places were not removed; and as yet the people had not directed their hearts to the God of their fathers" (2 Chron. 20:33). This only proves that at the beginning of his reign Jehoshaphat undertook to abolish them and maintained this personally; but that the people, whose consciences had not been reached, quickly fell back into these idolatrous practices against which Jehoshaphat, weakened by his alliance with the king of Israel, was unable to exercise his authority so as to lead the people in the right way.
