the earth.
This is coincident with the great white throne, and the heaven and the earth fleeing away, as spoken of in the 20th chapter of the Revelation. You have the effect of this mighty conflagration given you in Revelation, whereas you have what produces that effect given you by the Apostle Peter here. (Where Is the Promise of His Coming? by W.T.P. Wolston)
The Lord will come when men do not expect Him, as a thief in the night, and thus usher in His day. That “day” will comprise a thousand years as other Scriptures show. It will commence with His coming and not close until the passing away of the earth and its surrounding heavens, dissolved by fire. (2 Peter 3 by F.B. Hole)

J. N. Darby Translation

+
10
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a rushing noise, and the elements, burning with heat, shall be dissolved, and the earth and the works in it shall be burnt up.

W. Kelly Translation

+
10
But the day of [the] Lord will come as a thiefa; in which the heavens shall pass away with rushing noise, and elements, with fervent heat, shall be dissolved, and [the] earth and the works that are therein shall be burnt up.

The RV omits rightly "in the night." Though here again we see how lax are their views of the article "the."
