Abel

Boyd’s Bible Dictionary:

(meadow). A prefix for several names of towns and places. (1) The “plain of the vineyards” (Judg. 11:3333And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel. (Judges 11:33); see margin) (2) A city in the north of Palestine, attacked by Joab (2 Sam. 20:14-1514And he went through all the tribes of Israel unto Abel, and to Beth-maachah, and all the Berites: and they were gathered together, and went also after him. 15And they came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maachah, and they cast up a bank against the city, and it stood in the trench: and all the people that were with Joab battered the wall, to throw it down. (2 Samuel 20:14‑15)). Probably same as Abel-Beth-Maachah. “Plain of the vineyard” (Judg. 11:3333And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. (Judges 11:33), margin note.) “Great stone of” (1 Sam. 6:1818And the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of Abel, whereon they set down the ark of the Lord: which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Beth-shemite.
