Satan, the adversary, stood up against Israel and provoked David to number Israel (1 Chron. 21:1¹And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel. (1 Chronicles 21:1); compare 2 Sam. 24:1¹And again the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah. (2 Samuel 24:1)). He also opposed Joshua the high priest (Zech. 3:1¹And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. (Zechariah 3:1)). “Your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8⁸Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: (1 Peter 5:8)). In Revelation 12:10¹⁰And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. (Revelation 12:10) he is also called the accuser of the brethren. It is one of the names or characters of Satan: he is not only the tempter of man, but he is also the positive enemy, the adversary of all, seeking to devour whom he may, and to distress and lead astray those he is not permitted to destroy.
