Dill—Anethum Graveolens
Probably ἄνηθον refers to the common “dill,” which is different from the ἄνισον, the “anise.” Both the plant and seed were and still are used as a condiment in the east, and are found in the modern
materia medica
. The Pharisees were careful to pay tithes of such things while they omitted the weightier matters of the law (
Matt. 23:23

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. (Matthew 23:23)
