1. City “before Rabbah,” that is, near Rabbath Ammon; in the valley of the Jabbok, built or rebuilt by the tribe of Gad (Num. 32:34³⁴And the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer, (Numbers 32:34); Josh. 13:25²⁵And their coast was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the children of Ammon, unto Aroer that is before Rabbah; (Joshua 13:25); 2 Sam. 24:5⁵And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the river of Gad, and toward Jazer: (2 Samuel 24:5)).

2. Moabite city on the north bank of the Arnon (Deut. 2:36³⁶From Aroer, which is by the brink of the river of Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: the Lord our God delivered all unto us: (Deuteronomy 2:36); Josh. 13:9, 16⁹From Aroer, that is upon the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain of Medeba unto Dibon; (Joshua 13:9)

3. District near Damascus (Isa. 17:2²The cities of Aroer are forsaken: they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid. (Isaiah 17:2)).

4. City in Judah, S.E. of Beersheba (1 Sam. 30:28²⁸And to them which were in Aroer, and to them which were in Siphmoth, and to them which were in Eshtemoa, (1 Samuel 30:28)). Identified with Ararah, 31° 11' N, 34° 56' E.
