Concise Bible Dictionary:

The Lord was the Bridegroom, and while He was on earth the “sons” (companions, friends) of the bridechamber could not mourn nor fast; but in His absence they would do so (Matt. 9:1515And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast. (Matthew 9:15); Mark 2:1919And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. (Mark 2:19); Luke 5:3434And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? (Luke 5:34)). The friend of the Bridegroom (to whom John the Baptist likened himself) is spoken of in distinction from the bride herself (John 3:2929He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. (John 3:29)).
