[
MARRIAGE
.]
Concise Bible Dictionary
:
A title which the
Lord
applies to Himself (
Matt. 9:15
15
And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast. (Matthew 9:15)
;
Matt. 25:1-10
1
Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.
2
And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
3
They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:
4
But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
5
While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
6
And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.
7
Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.
8
And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.
9
But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.
10
And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. (Matthew 25:1‑10)
; compare
John 3:29
29
He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. (John 3:29)
). It anticipates the
joy
of Christ, the
marriage
day
when He will take to Himself all that for which He suffered so much.
From
Manners and Customs of the Bible
:
John 3:29
29
He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. (John 3:29)
. The friend of the
bridegroom
, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice.
“The friend of the bridegroom” was the person selected by the bridegroom to conduct the
marriage
negotiations on his part. It was he who carried messages between the bridegroom and the
bride
during the
time
of the betrothal. See note on
Matthew 1:18
18
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. (Matthew 1:18)
(#629). When, on the occasion of the marriage, they were brought to see each other in a private room or under a canopy provided for the purpose, the “friend of the bridegroom” stood without, eager to catch the first words of delight which came from the bridegroom’s lips, expressive of the satisfaction he experienced on conversing with his betrothed.
This position
John the Baptist
claims for himself figuratively. He is not the Christ, but bears a relation to him similar to that borne by the paranymph to the bridegroom. He makes the arrangements for bringing Christ, the bridegroom, to the
Church
, his bride. He waits with reverence and respect to hear words of
joy
coming from the lips of Christ because he has found a waiting and a willing Church. As the services of the paranymph only occupied a short time, so the Baptist’s mission would soon be over: “He must increase, but I must decrease” (
John 3:30
30
He must increase, but I must decrease. (John 3:30)
).
