Look at the picture on our cover. Volunteers are wanted to do some perilous deed for France. All want to go. To call for volunteers means a response from the whole company. Eagerness and entreaty on every face. Each one saying, “Here am I, send me!” The work is dangerous, almost certain death — but it is for France, and everything else is forgotten. The same spirit animates our British soldiers as well.
Splendid heroism, you say; such men deserve to be victorious. For flag and country they give their lives freely.
Oh! how it shames us as Christians. If every Christian in the Army, and out of it, were as eager to work for Christ, what wonderful work would be done.
The prophet Isaiah heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send and who will go for us?” He was a man who had seen the glory of God, whose sins had been forgiven, and he cried, “Here am I, send me.” God called for volunteers, and he was ready and eager to go. Are you?
