The refuse of threshed and winnowed grain—the husk of the wheat. Used symbolically for that which is quickly consumed, or easily swept away by the wind—worthless people (Psa. 1:4⁴The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. (Psalm 1:4); Psa. 35:5⁵Let them be as chaff before the wind: and let the angel of the Lord chase them. (Psalm 35:5); Isa. 5:24²⁴Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. (Isaiah 5:24); Jer. 23:28²⁸The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the Lord. (Jeremiah 23:28)). The wicked also are compared to chaff to be burned up with unquenchable fire—eternal punishment (Matt. 3:12¹²Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. (Matthew 3:12); Luke 3:17¹⁷Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. (Luke 3:17)).
