Herdsmen despised by Egyptians (Gen. 46:34³⁴That ye shall say, Thy servants' trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and also our fathers: that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination unto the Egyptians. (Genesis 46:34)), but honored by Hebrews (1 Sam. 11:5; 21:7⁵And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh. (1 Samuel 11:5)
⁷Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the Lord; and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that belonged to Saul. (1 Samuel 21:7)).

Herd

In the Old Testament the term “herd” is applied to the cattle, the word “flocks” embracing the sheep and goats. As these, with camels, constituted the principal property of the patriarchs, the herdmen held an important office. All the sons of Jacob were introduced to Pharaoh as shepherds, and men whose trade had been to feed cattle (Gen. 46:32³²And the men are shepherds, for their trade hath been to feed cattle; and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have. (Genesis 46:32); Ex. 10:9⁹And Moses said, We will go with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds will we go; for we must hold a feast unto the Lord. (Exodus 10:9); 1 Sam. 21:7⁷Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the Lord; and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that belonged to Saul. (1 Samuel 21:7)). Amos had been a herdmen (Amos 1:1¹The words of Amos, who was among the herdmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake. In the New Testament the term “herd” is only applied to the swine that, possessed by the demons, perished in the sea (Matt. 8:30, 32³⁰And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding. (Matthew 8:30)
³²And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters. (Matthew 8:32)).
