(Numbers 21:33‑35); Deut. 1:44After he had slain Sihon the king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei: (Deuteronomy 1:4); Deut. 3:1,101Then we turned, and went up the way to Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei. (Deuteronomy 3:1)
10All the cities of the plain, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, unto Salchah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. (Deuteronomy 3:10)
; Josh. 12:44And the coast of Og king of Bashan, which was of the remnant of the giants, that dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei, (Joshua 12:4); Josh. 13:12,3112All the kingdom of Og in Bashan, which reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei, who remained of the remnant of the giants: for these did Moses smite, and cast them out. 31And half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were pertaining unto the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, even to the one half of the children of Machir by their families. (Joshua 13:31)
). It fell to the lot of Manasseh. It is identified with ed Deraah, 32° 38' N, 36° 6' E. It is a place of great natural strength, being surrounded by a labyrinth of clefts and crevasses in the rock. The houses are of stone, with stone roofs and stone doors. There is no water there, and the spot seems chosen for security. About 50 families of desperate character inhabit the place. Underneath the city are many large caves, forming a subterranean city, with streets and houses; but a recent traveler found the entrance blocked by a rock, and was told that the passage had been blown up to prevent the caves being used as a hiding place from justice.
2. City of Naphtali in the north, near Kedesh (Josh. 19:3737And Kedesh, and Edrei, and En-hazor, (Joshua 19:37)). Identified by some with Yater, 33° 9' N, 35° 20' E.
