Inhabitant of Ephrath or Beth-lehem-judah (Ruth 1:22And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem-judah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there. (1 Kings 11:26), where some translate “Ephraimite,” as in the RV, and as is evidently the meaning of the same word in Judges 12:4-54Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim: and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, Ye Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim among the Ephraimites, and among the Manassites. 5And the Gileadites took the passages of Jordan before the Ephraimites: and it was so, that when those Ephraimites which were escaped said, Let me go over; that the men of Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? As to 1 Samuel 1:11Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite: (1 Samuel 1:1), Elkanah, though a Levite, may have been called an Ephraimite because located in that tribe (compare Judg. 17:77And there was a young man out of Bethlehem-judah of the family of Judah, who was a Levite, and he sojourned there. (Judges 17:7)).
