4Then came he out of the land of the Chaldeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell. (Acts 7:4). Its district is situated between the river Khabour and the Euphrates. There is still a town in the district called Harran, about 36° 50' N, 39° E. The name signifies “road” in Accadian. It was probably so called because the caravan routes of Syria, Assyria and Babylonia crossed there. It was the seat of a bishopric in the fourth century, and there are still ruins of a cathedral.
