A woman given up to fornication: there were such as early as Genesis 38:15¹⁵When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face. (Genesis 38:15). The term is used metaphorically for unfaithfulness: “how is the faithful city become an harlot!” (Isa. 1:21²¹How is the faithful city become an harlot! it was full of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers. (Isaiah 1:21); Ezek. 16:31,35³¹In that thou buildest thine eminent place in the head of every way, and makest thine high place in every street; and hast not been as an harlot, in that thou scornest hire; (Ezekiel 16:31)
³⁵Wherefore, O harlot, hear the word of the Lord: (Ezekiel 16:35)). The mystic Babylon is designated “The mother of harlots” (Rev. 17:5⁵And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. (Revelation 17:5)), not only unfaithful herself, but the mother of such.
