This word, which is the same in the Greek, is considered to be a compound of two Hebrew words, and signifies “save now,” as in Psalm 118:25²⁵Save now, I beseech thee, O Lord: O Lord, I beseech thee, send now prosperity. (Psalm 118:25). In the New Testament the sense appears to be “bestow blessing.” “Bestow blessing on the Son of David: bestow blessing [O thou who art] in the highest” (Matt. 21:9⁹And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. (Matthew 21:9); Mark 11:9-10⁹And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: ¹⁰Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest. (Mark 11:9‑10); John 12:13¹³Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. (John 12:13)).
