Isa. 50:2• 2Wherefore did I come, and there was no man? I called, and there was none to answer? Is my hand at all shortened that I cannot redeem, or have I no power to deliver? behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make rivers a wilderness; their fish stink because there is no water, and die for thirst. 26And he says to them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then, having arisen, he rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
27But the men were astonished, saying, What sort of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?
(Matt. 8:8‑9,26‑27)
The obedience of the humblest creatures, as recorded in Scripture, is deeply instructive. The Lord Jesus when on earth wanted a fish which possessed a shekel, and that particular fish, and no other, caught at Peter's hook (Matt. 17:27). The colt upon which never man sat—an untamed novice for work—obediently carried the Lord through the streets of Jerusalem, although surrounded by a shouting multitude (Matt. 21:7). It might not have been wise for either reader or writer to mount that colt! In like manner, the Mediterranean Sea monster was at the appointed place when Jonah was cast out of the ship; it took care of him for the divinely appointed period; and then released him in God's time, and in the place where God required him. (The Second Commission by W.W. Fereday)
The Bible opens with “Elohim.” No other title is found until we pass Genesis 2:3. This title tells us of the divine supremacy—God as the mighty cause of all. “Jehovah” is His title of relationship (wonderful indeed that He should condescend to enter into relationship with His humble creature man). (Elohim and Jehovah by W.W. Fereday)
But, blessed be God! Christ went down into death; and, as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the fish, so also the Son of Man went down into the heart of the earth for the same period of time. But who could prevent His rising again? It was death here that was without strength, and not man....He is not only the faithful witness, but the firstborn from the dead. (Jonah 2 by J.N. Darby)
Just as Jonah was preserved of God in the great fish, so also are the Jews now preserved of God, and will be brought out to be a joy and praise to His name in the earth, whatever their present lost estate. (Jonah 2 by W. Kelly)
As soon as Jonah really learned that salvation is of Jehovah, then Jehovah brought salvation. And how did He accomplish this salvation? By a word. He spoke and the fish obeyed. (Jonah 2: Jonah Prays by G.C. Willis)
This word to the fish reminds us of the 29th Psalm, a Psalm with which Jonah was, no doubt, familiar. Perhaps it brought comfort and hope to his soul, when down at the bottoms of those mountains he recalled that “Jehovah sitteth upon the flood; yea, Jehovah sitteth as King forever.” Psa. 29:10 JND Trans. (Jonah 2: Jonah Prays by G.C. Willis)
